The Starland Arts District, located within the borders of the Thomas Square Streetcar Historic District, is one of Savannah’s most popular and fashionable emerging neighborhoods. The community is mixed, the architecture is Craftsman, and your journey awaits in Starland. The district traces its history back over a period of more than a hundred years. Specifically, its origins lie in the founding of the Starland Dairy, a milk processing factory around which the rest of the neighborhood would develop over the course of several decades. In the early 20th century, development of both residential and commercial buildings took off, peaking in 1920 – the same year the street cars were removed. During the period, two-story homes, apartments, and single-family buildings were added. A number of architectural styles can be found in the area, including Queen Anne, Folk Victorian, Neoclassical Revival and Craftsman. After World War II, the neighborhood shifted dramatically as wealthy residents filtered out and into the suburbs and beyond, and businesses left the area. 50 years later half the housing and more than half of the commercial structures in the community had become derelict or razed because of severely deteriorated conditions. In 1999, two SCAD students had a vision for the area around the old Starland Dairy, which was in danger of being razed. They wanted to transform the old dairy, and the area around it, naming the area the Starland District. The restoration of the Starland District began in 2000 and is still a work in progress. The plan aimed to restore both its residential and commercial functions, creating a vibrant new art and design district that has since become a haven for local artists and musicians, and packed with the city’s best indie boutiques, cafés, shops, and even a brewery! The area Queen Anne, Greek Revival and Craftsman-style homes continues to pique the interest of preservation buffs and tourists alike, bringing many newcomers to this trendy area. This is still a rapidly gentrifying area with a diverse population consisting of SCAD students, long-time Savannah locals, newcomers, and visitors like you. SCAD’s off-campus housing less than 2-blocks away at Victory Village. During the school year, you'll notice many SCAD students walking around, headed to their dorms or to class. Victory North, Savannah’s premier venue for live music is just a short 2-block walk. Savannah's finest and funniest comedy group, Front Porch Improv, is literally around the corner – just a 2-block walk. Perfect for an evening out with friends. Starland Yard’s amazing food truck court is just a 5-minute walk and there are dozens of amazing dining options nearby - all less than a 15-minute walk. The home is next door to a car lot, and while it may not be aesthetically pleasing, it should not impact your overall stay. It's an exciting time to visit, and we ask our guests to be tolerant and respectful of our diverse neighborhood, and the people who call Savannah home. Local neighborhood shops and restaurants include: ✹ Starland Yard - You're going to love this place! Just a 5-minute walk, this outdoor food truck haven offers a kid and dog-friendly atmosphere with lively entertainment on most nights, draft beer, and probably the best wood-fire pizza ever! ✹ Foxy Loxy Coffee - A mixture of an art gallery, coffee shop and bistro, Foxy Loxy has menu options that include all three mealtimes, coffee drinks and even wine alongside constantly changing creative displays. ✹ Grave Face Records & Curiosities - Funky destination for used records & cassettes, plus taxidermy animals & pop culture novelties. ✹ Picker Joe's Antique Mall & Vintage Market – A sprawling warehouse where you'll find a treasure trove of antiques, vintage, mid-century furniture and even a house brand of coffee. We respectfully ask that you observe quiet hours from 10PM, every night of the week. Violations of this rule may result in a formal report filed on Airbnb or early termination of your booking. ✹ POTENTIAL FOR NOISE - This is a 100+ year-old craftsman-style triplex house in an urban downtown neighborhood. Built in 1920, the walls are thin and not soundproof. It is possible that you may hear noise at some point during your stay. If you are sensitive to noise, we highly suggest packing earplugs or utilizing a white noise app. ✹ STREET CLEANING - Street cleaning takes place weekly. The posted street signs will indicate which day of the week cleaning occurs. If you find street cleaning is occurring on a street on which you are parked, you may find alternate parking on an adjacent street where street sweeping is not taking place. ✹ OPEN CONTAINER POLICY - Downtown Savannah has an open container policy (plastic only) which allows you to walk around and drink (only) in the downtown Historic District, north of Forsyth Park. If you want to spend a night out on the town, West Congress Street is home to a high concentration of bars. ✹ FREE DOT SHUTTLE - Guests can use Savannah’s Free DOT trolley service to get around downtown Savannah. The nearest stop is just a short 2 block walk from the home, on Whitaker Street. ✹ LATE CHECK-OUT - Please get in contact with us should you require a late check-out, and we will do our best to accommodate you. Failure to notify us in advance of a late check-out may result in additional fees. ✹ ITEMS LEFT AFTER CHECK-OUT - Upon check-out, please check the home thoroughly for your personal belongings. A $50 shipping fee will be charged to ship items back to you. ✹ PEST CONTROL - The home benefits from regular pest control, but due to our beautiful southern weather and lush, leafy-green surroundings, you may occasionally encounter an outdoor bug. We host multiple properties throughout Savannah! Convenient location. It is a developing area and we felt safe. Easy to get to shops and attractions by car, bike or public transportation.
We had a few problems with AC and appliances but Angeline took care of them right away. The service men were very friendly and helpful.
The apartments could use some TLC but nothing major. I would stay there again when in Savannah. Good price and definitely a nice setting for large groups. We liked the way the back yards connect to each other and the arcade games were definitely a hit with the grandkids.
Thank you for a great family get together.

The marketing photos are great, but this place needs some updates. I just went back to look at the listing photos to make sure I wasn't mis-remembering. The photos show pristine white walls and shiny floors. It felt like the apartments hadn't really been deep-cleaned since those photos were taken. The walls and baseboards were dirty, and there were loose knobs and crooked curtains and crumbs in the drawers. I feel like I'm nitpicking, but it was just such a stark contrast from the photos, that I had to mention it. Was everything functional? Yes. Did it have the number of rooms and bathrooms as advertised? Yes. But did it meet expectations based on the photos? No. The kicker is, I would actually stay there again now that I know what to expect. But the large disconnect b/t the photos (even the staging is different) and the accommodations is what prompted 4-stars. I will say, the property did work well for my large group and pets. Just be prepared for the location, and wear and tear.

About a 20 minute drive from downtown Savannah, plenty of room for our big group with a responsive host. Just be careful with parallel street parking with just enough room for our 2 vehicles. Neighbor next door almost hit our parked vehicle and triggered car alarm in the middle of the night. Make sure you have enough bedding for sofa bed as soon as you check in as we didn't realize we were missing bedding until later in the evening. Host was contacted and immediately responded that cleaners will deliver in the morning which they did. One bedroom was missing closet rod so didn't get to hang clothes in there. Otherwise we had a great stay with welcome treats waiting for us.

Host response: Thanks for staying and for the helpful review, glad you enjoyed the space and welcome treats. I’m sorry for the inconveniences you experienced; we’ll address those items right away to improve future stays. Safe travels and you’re welcome back to our home anytime.
